Portage College partners with OERu
Portage College has recently announced a partnership agreement with international education provider Open Educational Resources Universitas (OERu). The partnership allows the college to collaborate in building and providing Open Educational Resources (OERs) to students, in an effort to expand program offerings and provide affordable access to higher education.
"We're thrilled to join this partnership and share our knowledge of OER development," said Dr. Trent Keough, President and CEO of Portage College. "Portage College is committed to grow the potential of OERs in Alberta, in fact, Portage was the first post-secondary institution in Alberta to build OERs directly into our program development planning."
The concept of the OERu is to use the power of digital distribution to widen access to more affordable higher education, especially for learners excluded from the formal sector. Partnering institutions in the OERu network agree to assemble and develop two courses using existing OER material, and in turn have access to a minimum of 60 high quality courses in the partnership network.
"We are looking to the future of higher education, and our institution is committed to seeing OERs developed and implemented across our program offerings," said Mardere Birkill, Vice President Academic. "We want to continue building our reputation as an innovative and creative college, and OERs are certainly a big part in establishing future learning opportunities."
