Botswana Open University (BOU) originated through recommendation of the Tertiary Education Policy to transform the Botswana College of Distance and Open Learning (BOCODOL) into a national Open and Distance Learning (ODL) university, established by Act of Parliament in July 2017.
The University’s mandate is to make education accessible to all Batswana, especially for out-of-school youth and adults, using ODL methods. Open learning seeks to break down the barriers to personal development by providing flexible learning environments, enabling people to study what is relevant to their needs, at a time and place convenient to them.
Headquarted in Gaborone, BOU also has campuses in Francistown, Palappye, Maun, and Kang, and provides education and training on a national scale through ODL.
The University offers programmes including school equivalency qualifications, vocational, management, and professional programmes at certificate, diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate degree levels.
Partnering with OERu, Open Educational Resources (OER) offers tremendous potential for BOU to realise its strategic goals of greater access to learning.
