Ethiraj College for Women was founded in 1948 as a Day College teaching undergraduate courses in Economics, Botany, Chemistry, History, Zoology and English Literature. The College commenced with M.Phil and Ph.D.programmes in 1981 with the introduction of Evening College, and achieved Autonomous Status from the University Grants Commission in 1999.

The College is committed to achieving economic and social equity for women and through them to strengthen the nation. Innovation and inclusion are key values to promote sustainable development.

OER is well aligned with the aims of the College, that is, not only to contribute to successful citizenship but also to develop individuals who will go the extra mile to transform this world for the better.
